The Theatre's Projects

Gillan-3819

Boris Eifman`s theatre works in St.Petersburg for more than thirty years. However during all this time the artistic collective hadn`t own stage; the rehearsal base on the Petrogradskaya city area became home for actors and other theatre`s staff. Several years ago the authorities of St.Petersburg have supported the initiative of building of a new, modern building for theater. In 2009 the results of competition on the best architectural project have been summed up. Today works are going on intensively for developement of a package of engineering specifications of the future building and also of the territory preparation. The Dance Palace should become an architectural dominant of complex which will appear in Petrogradskaya city area on the bank of Low Neva River.

Following Boris Eifman's plan, the Dance Palace won`t be simply just ballet theater, but it will become an international center of the choreography development. Within the precincts of a new building three theatre companies will creatively coexist representing three periods of the Russian ballet history: the classical ballet of the XIX century, psychological ballet of the XX century, which is represented by Boris Eifman's troupe in all its variety, and also dance avant-guard of a new millennium. Young choreographers from different cities of Russia, and also from the countries of near and far abroad will get an opportunity to conduct own creative search in this new area. For these purposes the Dance Palace is projected as a multipurpose educational and performing art complex which structure will include the large and the small stages, rehearsal halls and administrative premises necessary for high qualified and comfortable functioning of the theater.

Boris Eifman:
«The dance palace won't become a theater for one company. I see it as the world center of the ballet art where all modern dance ideas and forms will concentrate. Petersburg can and should be in avant-guard of this process, and most innovative and distinguished ideas will be born here as it was in the time of Dyagilev, Stravinsky, Meyerhold, Shostakovich

Nadezhda Vinnik, the general director of «Petersburg City» Ltd.:

«We are convinced that appearance of a new, modern, dynamical quarter in the center of Petersburg becomes event for a city. And not only because of that place of the prohibited industrial territory will become the footpath quay along Neva, beautiful facades of buildings will grow, shops and cafe will open. «Quay of Europe» should become one of world famous sights of Petersburg because in the center of quarter there will be the Dance Palace of Boris Eifman. Palace opening will be remarkable event in cultural life of a city and the country. I hope our project will be an example of scaled cooperation of the state and business in the sphere of development of the Russian culture and art».

In 2011 the governor of St.-Petersburg Valentina Matvienko has signed the decision  (look here for the details) «About creation of the St.-Petersburg state institution of vocational education - Dance Academy of Boris Eifman». Dance academy comes as socially focused project having certain high value for cultural life of a city and whole country.

The prestigious educational institution organized on a principle of imperial ballet schools, will prepare dancers not only for Petersburg, but also for other cities of Russia. Following the plan of founders, students of Academy will receive not only the general and vocational training, solid luggage of cultural knowledge and special skills, but can cope with various directions of dancing art, including the most advanced and cutting-edge. Working out and introduction of innovative techniques of training are also aims of Academy.

New buildings of educational institution will settle down in a quarter near Bolshoy prospect of the Petrogradskaya city area. Under the project developed by an architectural workshop of Nikita Javeyn "Studija-44", a total area of premises of the future Academy will take 12 000 sq. m. Besides audiences and offices the project provides building of a sports complex with swimming pool, a medical complex, 14 ballet halls equipped with advanced video and sound equipment. In Academy building`s ensemble it is planned to include a private residence of Greffe-Dobert, a monument of wooden architecture of the XIX century, located near.

Boris Eifman:
"Our Academy is not only cultural, but the social project. We want to select talented children from children's homes, from unsuccessful families across all Russia, and to give them chance on state care to receive a trade, to take place in life, and then to make something for the country. We believe that our school of ballet will give a new impulse to the development of the cultural life of the city, and also will help to find new decisions in business of the help of a society to the adolescent citizens."

Evidently, an up-to-date theatre can't exist without high technologies. Professional video and sound equipment gives not only priority before other companies. It allows to make work more interesting, creative, and to embody rehearsals of performances, premieres, tour performances and everyday life what’s significant. For this reason Eifman Ballet company established own Multimedia center (MMC) within the support of Investment culture fund grant. The project was finalized during the period from May, 2007 till December, 2008. MMC is a new division of theater. It consists of audio and video cutting rooms, premises for warehousing of cases with the equipment for guest performance shootings and archive.
The materials received during work can be used for creation of presentation and training DVDs and as programs about ballet for TV. Theater`s performances will remain in the history, young actors will have an opportunity to be trained in dance at the advanced level. The materials finished at theater can be transferred in archive of film - and documentary funds.

During the existence of MMC all performances of current theatre repertoire have been fixed on video at high professional level, many hours of rehearsal and creative process are shot, video- and a photoarchive with the extensive presentation video data are prepared. In January-February 2010 on the stage of Dvorets Kultury Lensoveta were shot films-ballets "Anna Karenina" and "Onegin". First film editing has been made in the autumn of 2010. Work on "Onegin" will be finished in first half of 2011. Also are planned shooting and release on DVD of HD versions of other ballets of Boris Eifman. In 2011 should begin shootings of ballet "Seagull".
